There's been news all along, Pierre just belongs to the indie developer marketing school of "If I build it, don't say anything about it, don't promote it or give interviews or visit game forums, somehow, without any way of knowing about my game, they will come."

It's a surprisingly popular strategy.

It's always a pleasant surprise to get any updates about such masterpieces.
Some RPG fans may dislike the new graphical style, but for sure it's more attractive for a mainstream player than KotC1 16-bit style.

You think so? There are tons of games out using that old style, and I don't think many people were attracted to KotC for the graphics. I'm not against the new style exactly, but I'm not crazy about some of his choices, like having the tokens be round instead of square. The round format crops a lot of the image sometimes. He wasn't able to afford the best artist money could buy either. You don't need as much talent to make 8-bit look good.

I think the old style and interface made the eyes of the younger generation of players bleed.
As for the new one, it leaves enough room for imagination and it's absolutely functional, and also modable, for sure.
For sure there could be minor improvements like ones you mentioned, but in general in my opinion the new graphical style is more attractive.

I greatly prefer the old style.

I haven't seen #2 in motion, tho, which might help things (but I'm guessing not).

Personally I'm ok with either style, I would play the game even in ASCII. My point is that the new style is more acceptable for the youngsters.
Also, most certainly later any of these images and textures can be replaced by some other sets, developed either by enthusiasts or by HFG themselves.

I don't see the new style as having any greater appeal to younger players. Probably a lost cause either way, really. It's cleaner but also much more boardgame-like, vastly less videogame-like. Maybe it would translate well to a tablet environment?

Anyway: I obviously don't have a close understanding of his market, but I still find it baffling that he thinks it's worth putting in (probably) a thousand-plus hours to make the game, then leave it with basically no marketing, yet continue to sell the 5-year-old game for more than $20 at a time when bundles/sales are conditioning even the most "indie" of consumers to $5-10 for 6-month-old titles. Sigh.

I've got to agree with suibhne. There's no reason boardgame style graphics should appeal more to the stereotypical (and I'm not sure they actually exist in this context) graphics whore fans of turn-based fantasy RPGs than 8-bit. In any case I appreciate good design over good graphics. That's what keeps old games strong once the graphics improve and leave their visuals behind.

A common remark about KotC1 I read at gaming boards was "So ugly. Was it made in 1990s?"

Brutally unfair to the games released in 1990.

The young people, they're so spoiled by high resolutions and 3D effect *grumble-grumble*

There's been a new update on the progress of KOTC2, which I think is available for anyone to read, plus the previous one was made public for sure.

In short:
Things are progressing. A plethora of sub-races has been added to offer interesting variants on the base races. A slew of new hybrid classes have been added(psionicist-mage, fighter-mage, etc).
Some of the old classes have been given some interesting variants.

The base system may be complete this year, at least it has made considerable progress recently. However, that doesn't mean the game is ready this year, as far as I know.
