If it's going to be anything like Fallout 3 I doubt I'll lose sleep over it.

High potential, high risk for disappointment. The pitch isn't as smooth as it could be, but this is totally worth some attention:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/othersidegames/underworld-ascendant

They don't have the ability to use the name "Ultima", but they have the rights to everything else: setting, lore, monsters, etc. Garriott has already signed on to help create common lore between this project and his forthcoming "Shroud of the Avatar". Paul Neurath (leading this project) might not be as big a name these days as some others, but he basically founded LookingGlass and oversaw the creation of "Ultimate Underworld", "Thief" and "System Shock". He's put together a pretty impressive team.
I want to believe as I'm a massive Looking Glass fanboy, but the pitch was extremely underwhelming.

Whats "borderline lunatic" when thats exactly what the scene is made for, exactly what it shows. Its the oldest trick in the book to get dumbasses emotionally engaged. And if you are not personally offended by someone just saying so... why do you answer with personal insults, dipshit?

I guess I understimated you.
" Borderline" my hairy ass, you are a fully developed lunatic.

P.S. Holy shit, the recurring whine about the "camera pointing on her nipples first" reads like a textbook example of "trying too hard".

No, the only recurring theme is whining by schmucks like you who somehow get personally offended that someone criticized cheap schlock the company used to present a very important character in the whole Witcher saga.

I didn't get "personally offended". I just find describing that scene as "pointing at her nipples first" borderline lunatic.
Beside, I'm not uncomfortable with sex and sexy character at all, so I don't feel any urge to justify anything.

P.S. But hey, keep fighting the good fight.

...Or, since we live in a world where being honest about anything is guaranteed to destroy your career, just not say anything.

Which, ironically enough, is pretty much what they are doing.

My initial reaction to combat in W1 was profoundly negative, however as I played longer and Geralt got more and more powerful it eventually became tolerable

It went more or less in the opposite direction for me.
The first impression was "Hum, it doesn't have much but it's interesting, with all the powers and bombs I can see it becoming more tactically complex as we unlock new abilities through the game...".
Turned out I was wrong. It became more and more dull as the character grew in power, making even any resemblance of tactical planning pretty much redundant, when you could just select "group style", close your eyes, click every 2,5 seconds and slain anything alive on screen.
For all the shit it gets for being underwhelming and mediocre, I still find the combat in TW2 a massive improvement over the brain-dead system used in the first game. Especially if you refrain yourself from being a compulsive roller and try to get "aiming and timing" right.

P.S. Holy shit, the recurring whine about the "camera pointing on her nipples first" reads like a textbook example of "trying too hard".

Obviously just one source, and also covers only the first three hours of gameplay. Maybe CDPR gave early-game characters a little more love (tho I found the first two games pretty consistent in that respect), and maybe the combat really is less engaging than in TW2 (or maybe it'll be just fine for those of us who find TW2's combat to be okay).

Not exactly a fan of the combat in TW2, but I do think a lot of people exaggerate the criticism toward it to an hilarious degree, to the point of describing it as "unplayable mess", while strangely enough a lot (a LOT) of games with far worse combat, like Skyrim or Assassin's Creed) don't seem to get nearly the same amount of shit.

If TW3 is even just marginally improved as many are claiming after the hands on event, I'm mildly confident it will be more than decent enough to be moderately enjoyable.
Of course, I'm not expecting a new Dark Souls... But then again, what other action combat matches that?

You are entitled to your own, wrong opinion.
Morrowind is the best open world game of all time for many people, me included.
Skyrim and Fallout 3 are very good open world games as well.

Well, it may strike you  and your horrible standards as "wrong" but at least I know what I'm talking about and I don't make hilarious claims like "Morrowind best open world ever" or "Skyrim and Fallot 3 very good too".

Fallout 3 is terrible. It's a terrible "Fallout" game, a terrible roleplaying game and a terrible open-world game. In fact, it's so terrible that it made me not want to play another Bethesda game ever again and it was the first one I played.

Believe me, their other productions aren't any better from a design standpoint. If anything, worse. Every single Bethesda game is mechanically broken beyond belief.
Where Fallout 3 eclipses them is just in its spectacular ugliness in terms of art direction.

I am skeptical about that whole open world hype aswell, dozens of game developer studios tried to make good open world games, but so far only two have managed to succeed -  Rockstar Games and Bethesda Softworks.
I really hope CDProject Red did not bite off more than can chew.

I can hardly believe someone is actually pointing Bethesda games as a positive example of open world done well on this forum, of all places.
They are simply terrible at designing open worlds and filling them, They lack any sense of balance, pacing and content distribution.

Piranha Bytes or Origin were masters of this craft, not Bethesda.

All I read about the game is how wonderfully difficult it's combat is, without any info in regards to why it's worth the time investment. Even in reviews.

Well, read better reviews then? People wrote a shitload of stuff about what makes this game so good, there are probably hours and hours of youtube commentary about it, etc. Not to mention difficulty isn't even much of a big factor.
The game isn't even that hard, actually. It definitely barks more than it bites. It's baffling how much its alleged difficulty is overstated over and over.

What it actually achieves to be, on the other hand, is being extremely gratifying and enjoyable to play, well designed, rewarding and engrossing in terms of setting and lore, etc.

better in some ways, worse in others. But the most significant way in which it's better (mouse aiming in archery) is more important to me than the most

Well, that's an... unusual claim, considering how irrelevant archery tends to be in this game.

Interesting, I found the exact opposite to be true Grin

The world is full of weirdos, apparently.
I came across people claiming that M&KB for this game were "just as good" in the past (which I still think it's mostly bullshit), but you're probably the first one in existence that I read who's capable of claiming that they are even better than a controller.

EDIT: Oh, anyway I agree with other people in this thread saying this game is top tier stuff. It's a wonderful blending of incredibly solid gameplay, fascinating setting, good art direction and outstanding level design.
12  RPG / RPG Discussion / Re: Playing Dark Souls on PC on: October 13, 2013, 10:24:47 pm
I've been playing it a lot with kb+m as well, including invasions, pvp and so on without feeling any disadvantage. If you are comfortable with the usual PC first person control scheme, then I see no reason to get a gamepad.
Frankly? Bollocks.
I'm absolutely favorable to mouse and keyboard as control system (in fact, they are pretty much my favorite one) and I still wouldn't advice anyone to play this game with anything else than a controller.
Of course it could be done, but it's nowhere near close to be an ideal setup by any stretch of the imagination.
13  RPG / The Shelter - Official Dead State Forum / Re: Dead State is greenlighted on: April 19, 2013, 06:11:05 am
As long as Dead State won't be Steam-only in the long run (in regard to Shadowrun Returns), good for you.
Not sure why people are ranting that much about the Steam thing, when the fact that they just announced "No loot system in the game and just checkpoints over traditional saves" is a far worse offender.
14  RPG / The Age of Decadence / Re: The Generation Ship RPG that ITS might start working on one day on: April 14, 2013, 10:58:40 am
I like the idea of a small and (hopefully) neat dungeon crawler and I can see why you would go that way. After working for years on a single product, a small project could be a way to catch some breath before going full immersion into the next big thing.

That said, I'm quite curious about what we could expect from the new engine. Are you still going with Torque? Jumping on Unity?
What about the art? are you going to recycle assets from AoD or doing something entirely different?
15  RPG / The Age of Decadence / Re: AoD interview at Forbes on: March 17, 2013, 07:28:54 am
Forbes, that's pretty cool.
Well, I think it should be pointed that Forbes "contributors" actually are more like freelance bloggers hosted on their portal.
Still... Pretty cool, yeah.
