Will be backing in a moment....my only, very minor, concern is that perhaps you should have gone for 60 days. This would allow the small pledge amounts time to add up and even if you reached your goal in 30 days, the extra  pledges would have been icing on the cake. Congrats!

And do not forget to set up your gamepage on Board Game Geek's Video section.....I'll plug your KS page on BGG once it is up and it would be good to have your own dedicated page on VGG...

Ahh DZ, I did the same as you, preoredered Xenonauts a couple of years ago and repledged on KS. Regarding the games you mentioned, it is heartening to see that some "unknown" games did well with their $10 pledge levels, and I have complete faith that the groundswell that DS has generated on this forum alone will generate a large return. There are always cautionary tales to be had however.

I want to point to 2 recent KS projects that have miscalculated how long their pledge drive should take, when you also take into account how much they are looking for.

Conquest 2 has a funding amount of $675,000 and set their time period for 30 days. Here's the problem, when a pledge of $15 gets you the game, you have to generate a helluva lot of pledgers within a short period of time to even come close to achieving your goal. As of this writing, they only have collected $11,000+ with only 17 days to go. Now I am not going to question their decision to set their goal amount so high, but to have any chance, they should have put it for 60 days or more if KS has a higher range.

Another example is Always Outnumbered. Their funding amount is a more modest $175,000, but again, the lowest pledge to get the game is $15. They only have generated $7,800+ with 16 days to go.

So the business moral of these examples is that you make certain you set a realistic funding goal, based on the lowest price you are offering for the base game, and how many days you set the fund drive for. Now of course, if both of these games happen to reach their goals, then I was wrong which would be good for them. We'll just have to wait and see.

This one should also really bepointed out, as it's old school turn based, there's a beta/alpha demo downloadable, worse the download,
At this point i'm guessing DS gameplay will already be better than this one, but still worse it Smile

I understand there might be a language hurdle here, so I am not poking fun, but for clarity, I hope you meant "worth" the download and not "worse" which is an entirely different meaning. Xenonauts might finally be the heir apparant to X Com, just keep in  mind that it is an "Alpha" demo as there is more to come!

You bring up a valid point since OGRE is a boardgame....here are a couple of video games I am currently backing which shows how they handle pledge tiers and rewards.

Anyway, perhaps some ideas can be derived from these.

Here is an interesting article from INC.com regarding Kickstarter and the success Ogre has had, and why.

Xenonauts (true spirit of Xcom remake) is going to kickstarter very shortly with a public build that is quite playable, but at the end of the day the devs cannot let other projects put them off launching their own kickstarter. If the pitch is compelling, the pledges will come for sure. Doesn't hurt if people start spreading the word either.

Damn! I preordered Xenonauts months ago and tried their beta builds...moving and setting up a new IP and email caused me to completely forget about the game....need to get reacquainted and see how those who preordered are affected by the KS program....too many games in the fire.....

An interesting article over at gamepolitics brings up some of the miscalculations that can happen with kackstarter.

http://gamepolitics.com/2012/04/16/perils-reward-tiers-kickstarter-appeals

I still firmly believe you should kickstart, and have a tier for Linux!  Don't get to frightened just be sure you are careful in your calculations.  I notice you already have put thought into the shipping and physical costs associated to many prizes, but don't forget to factor in no-show people and the cut kickstarter and the various online pay systems take out.

This is an important article which the OP cited to digest, because I worry about one of the boardgames I am supporting, Zombicide, might be surprised by the additional costs their reward tiers are creating.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/zombicide

On the other hand the developer of OGRE has realized that he needs to curtail the rewards because the shippping costs for the box were becoming ponderous.

For video games, SHADOWRUN RETURNS has been adding more swag due to the extremely popular support it has received.

I'm looking forward to adding DEAD STATE to my Kickstarter support queue.

Well it is heartening to see an old school game like Shadowrun do extremely well on Kickstarter. And I want to point out that they make certain to mention that the game will be DRM free. A very important bit of information which allowed me to pledge without reservation.
11  RPG / The Shelter - Official Dead State Forum / Re: 3/19 Monday Design Update - Kickstarting a Kickstarter Discussion on: April 12, 2012, 04:37:28 pm
I just want to make one point regarding DRM which may or may not have been mentioned already. If a DRM scheme is to be used, I hope this information is clearly stated in the Kickstarter description. If it is an internet activated serial number license (such as OOTP), a non-internet serial number (such as Matrix uses), or Steam, this should be known to potential pledgers beforehand. Personally, I will pledge if it is an OOTP or Matrix scheme, but not if it is Steam or similiar installer design.

An added advantage to using Kickstarter is that you can get maximum exposure on Boardgame Geek. The site has a robust video game section and you could attach your game to a wide variety of "Geeklists" which can cross reference board game zombie and Kickstarter lists as well. This added audience will not hurt and in fact, even if you do not use the Kickstarter program, you should keep BGG in mind for future use.
13  RPG / The Shelter - Official Dead State Forum / Re: Optimistic theory as to why there hasn't been a recent update. on: January 19, 2012, 10:25:19 am
First off, I want to apologize because I was the one who used the term "vaporware" but if you read my post, you see that I was indicating to others on the outside that is WAS NOT "vaporware" despite the home page not being updated since May. I did not realize that others would run with the term and create a problem, so again, my apologies for even mentioning the V word.....
14  RPG / The Shelter - Official Dead State Forum / Re: Optimistic theory as to why there hasn't been a recent update. on: January 15, 2012, 12:39:45 am
At the very least, someone should spend a bit of time to change the home page update which is still from May...I have corrected posters in other forums who think this game is vaporware because of the impression the home page gives them.....
15  RPG / The Shelter - Official Dead State Forum / Re: 11/14 Monday Design Update - Weapons: Brush Hook on: November 15, 2011, 07:56:18 pm
Will there be any concern about having room to swing a long or two-handed weapon?  I'm mostly wondering if you and some allies are in an alleyway or someplace narrow and you swing your axe or brush hook, will it get stuck or hit one of your allies?

Sort of like in the show THE WALKING DEAD...the survivors do more harm to each other than the zombies do... Grin
