1  RPG / RPG Design / Re: Can we handle failing? on: August 03, 2008, 10:11:11 am
I'll reload, of course. Years of gaming taught me that failing to do a quest and continuing the game isn't usually supported by developers as a standard outcome. Or it adds nothing to a game.
If I'll meet a fresh approach, I will gladly continue failing to see consequences and differences.
I'm yet to play "loosing is funtm" game...

Let me use a specific example then. You need to find out something from NPC X. There are many different ways to do that, but let's say you decide to play a game of chance with him. Now you have two options: to play fairly relying on your INT or to cheat relying on your Streetwise. Let's say you pick the latter, but your skill isn't as good as you think and the NPC notices that you are cheating. He draws his sword ... and 5 turns later he's dead. Now what do you do?
What a shame you dropped non-lethal combat.

Thanks.

Platter's fixpack is so yesterday.

Basically, all cult rpgs now have restoration and bugfix fan mods.
Even Fallout 1.

Can you give me any suggestion?

Large polished blocks of white (or bright) stone of some kind as construction material for houses.
That's what you can usually see in movies.

Perhaps broken parts where the brick under it can be seen?

Nah. Inner walls would probably be replastered. They're rich and influential people after all.
Think about cracks. Hard to repair. Hard to hide.

Fantasy RPG, no elves, dwarves, or monsters.

Two lions for the arena wouldn't hurt, y'know.

What you don't like about the texture?

1. It looks the same with one for the outer sides of walls. Just with tweaked color. (last but one screenshot, upper right corner).
2. I think it's not appropriate for rich people's houses.
3. It doesn't show any signs of decadence.
4. It's too monotonous.

For a second I've got "Rome mod for cs_militia" feeling.

Btw, what about adding some statues?

Both. But I'd like a closer look at the texture.

*waves hand*
I've heard it doesn't work on salesmen.

I saw the "palace district" bit but...
Honestly, I don't like latest indoor screens. Not enough decadence (and ruined/repaired-with-cheaper-materials walls).

Floor texture is terrible. Can you try rhomb-based one and make it darker? It's too clean and new, are slaves in the game?
Walls are ugly too. No fresco in rich houses? No hanging expensive stuff, no nothing?

I prefer Fallout style fast travel. With the schemes and stuff, not photo-like.

Fallout's art direction is superior in many different ways.

I take it as inventory and items are finished. Good.

Haven't seen any inventory screens for a while. Can you show us some, Oscar?
We already know that everything weapon and armor related is very good but iirc you were going to rework some misc items.

And can you please demonstrate 'eye' button menu?

Kaelin - one of the most annoying NPC ever.

I really hated her until my evil playthrough. But good responce for my actions made me re-evaluate her.

True. I am yet to see well-written Cutthroat Bitch in rpg.

Oh no. I saw that coming.
Stop dragging me into holywar. Two more years and you'll be ashamed of your "KOTOR is the bestest game I ever played". Just play more good games.
HK47? Futurama's Bender ripoff. Except he's a bad one. Other characters? Cliche and stupidity. Canderous, Jolee, Bastila, Carth, Mission are interesting? You gotta be kidding me.
You want some good examples? Virgil from Arcanum, Dak'kon from PST, Kreia from KOTOR2, Kaelyn from MotB.

Beautiful locations - Dantooine, Tatooine, Korriban, the underwater stuff on Manaan,  the Shadowlands on Kashyyk, the Forbidden planet (all within technology limitations of course).

Yeah that background on forbidden planet was nice. Everything else is just meh. Tech limitations? Blame consoles.

OK, witty dialog, most of the stuff HK47 says. Also a lot of stuff the evil PC says. Pretty much everyone else says something interesting too, although I'm not sure it's actually witty. Beautiful locations - Dantooine, Tatooine, Korriban, the underwater stuff on Manaan,  the Shadowlands on Kashyyk, the Forbidden planet (all within technology limitations of course). Interesting characters - Canderous, HK47, Jolee, Bastila, Carth, Mission.
You are hopeless.

Thanks for insulting that guy so I don't have to. He really doesn't make any sense.
I just thought that arguing with him would be rather... pointless.
