Title: Our Steam page is now live
Post by: Vince on August 17, 2018, 03:58:24 pm
https://store.steampowered.com/app/648410/The_New_World/

Our Steam page is now live. While the intro trailer doesn't have any gameplay footage yet (expect the first footage in 3-4 months), it comes with a sample of the ambient tracks. We'll post development updates on Steam as well, so if you're interested please wishlist or follow the game.

While we're on the subject of music, here's what Ryan Eston Paul, our composer, had to say about it:

"Obviously we are in the very early stages of composing here, but even now “The New World” offers so much in way of texture and color from which to create the soundtrack for this world. The cold and dark hue of a metal world starkly illuminated by artificial light. The fatalistic hope of people living within structured living quarters that they will never be able to leave. A world without fields or forest, but with an extended “frontier” of damaged and gang-infested compartments and decks. All of these contrasts and textures create an interesting whole that is equal parts old and new. Just the combination of a science fiction setting and the “western” theme of an endless frontier of lawless land to explore is enough to make my musical wheels really turn.

With “The Age of Decadence”, there was a clear musical voice that was created, one that eschewed from many of the prominent musical tropes of rpg games. Big epic brass and action-packed strings were largely traded for haunting children’s choirs, lonely lute plucks and cryptic whispers. From the beginning, the goal of the team has been to immerse the player in the feel and texture of the world, thus engulfing them in the story, and “The New World” will be no different in this regard. But even while bearing a similar musical philosophy to “The Age of Decadence”, the sound palette of “The New World” has me very excited. Expect synthesizers and dark, unearthly electronic sounds, but also expect a few surprises."

Instantwhish, though I will have to update my 10 years old PC, I'm pretty sure I can't run it with my current config.

Don't know about you, but my expectations for TNW go far beyond "decent". The gaming industry is already full of decent RPGs...

OMG, I meet the minimal required config. I was expecting so much more. And only 5 GO HD free space ? That's what I call oldschool to the roots

I'm sorry to disappoint, but this a very rough estimate =) We don't even have a combat demo build finished, not speaking about full release, so HD space is the largest guess. I'll update requirements as we have more or less final assets.

As long CPU & GPU requirements don't change, it's fine for me. It's easier and cheaper to free some HD space than to change hardware.  :D

Concerning the screenshot with the stats and the portraits of the 4 companions, what does the "Regeneration" stat, between HPs and APs, imply exactly? Is it available for everyone? Or is it the consequence of a special item, implant, perk, etc?

Available to everyone; requires an implant (i.e. it's not a natural ability). The implants can't be removed but they can be upgraded, so higher quality (i.e. rare) implants that were given to military and bridge officers will offer stronger benefits.

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I would replace the game's logo on Steam from just text to a picture that's going to make people buy the game. Every other game which came up in Steam search looked more attractive because they all had colorful pictures. I would suggest featuring one of the games attractive female protagonists, guaranteed to increase engagement at least 100%! (Unless you want the Bioware crowd, then it's that masked chick).

How about a three-boobed mutant prostitute à la Total Recall?  :approve:

I did mention it to the developers in the past that the mob wants nothing but bread and circus boobs but they mocked me, not realizing how insightful I was. Now... I feel avenged!

Totally agree, AoD picture with stoneguard and other characters was cool, TNW need something like that. Say, pretty female, robot, some brutal mutant and guy with visible implants - tells a lot about game setting from first glance. :)

This is hilarious and ingenious at the same time, make it happen Vince. You can be sure that a feature like that would be commented even on mainstream sites.

Second this, but with only three characters, robot, brutal male mutant, and female with visible implants.

So, everyone agreed on the 3-boob mutant female for the Steam pic?

+1 if all 3 boobs are impants. It's cyberpunkish sci-fi game after all.

Thanks, man! The idea seems to have unleashed primordial forces. The people want boobs badly. And by temporarily quenching their thirst, you prevented a lynch mob attack on ITS, thus ensuring Vince & Co's safety for a little while longer.

Your dedication to the AoD fan community is very inspiring. :salute:

A lynch mob that would need to travel to three different continents and five(?) different countries. I think ITS is safe for now.

For a team of only 7, you guys sure are spread out... I bet you break Skype in two.  :P

So, you have Europe and North America obviously but which is the 3rd continent? South America? I assumed Joao is Portuguese but I guess he could be Brazilian. (Curiosity prevailed)

Refreshing to come across a man who dedicates himself so much to his work. It explains the high quality of the AoD music.

Without ever claiming to be a composer, off the top of my head, me suspects this gentleman was imagining something like this:

Something along those lines would be perfect for CS, in my opinion.

And no joke, Vangelis' Blade Runner score is easily top 5 for me. I have listened to it consistently since I was a kid.

Same here, a timeless score. I'm curious about the other top 4.
I quite enjoy Howard Shore's score for David Cronenberg's Crash. I can see it serving as an inspiration.

Top 4 would be hard.  Jerry Goldsmith's "The Omen" score might be up there.  As well as Jerry Goldsmith's "Gremlins" score.  Or his score to "Alien".  Man, I really love Jerry Goldsmith!  The "Jacob's Ladder" ost by Maurice Jarre.  For a modern score that I am completely obsessed with right now, check out Johan Johansson's score for Mandy!  It's crazy good.

But generally, I tend to get more excited about video game scores, for reasons ingrained deep within my pscyche that I can not seem to understand.

Damn, can't go wrong with those favorites, love them all! Ah, the glory days of yore..
I'll check out Mandy, thanks! I'm curious about the movie itself as well, Nicholas Cage used to be great in the 90s.

As for video game soundtracks, Matt Uelmen and Mark Morgan are my earliest non-midi favorites (though I'm curious what Lustmord's Torment score would have sounded like, were it ever finished).
Purely subjectiveIy, game soundtracks are often composed around the idea of being looped (a well written theme for a particular location might be repeated many times in a row without ever becoming tedious), often lacking abrupt crescendos present in some movie scores. Depending on a state of mind it may be a huge plus.

Got excited again.. 2 years.. Eternal torment..

I mean, yes, Mark Morgan of course! Age of Decadence was very much inspired by his work on Fallout. I have heard him receive some criticism for being a bit of a copycat, but that, unfortunately, can be part of the business, especially early in a composers career. Also, we artists fool ourselves if we think that we aren't copying our idols in some way. For the most part, we try and match the artists we admire, and fail, thus creating something new!

My son recently discovered Garage Band and has been experimenting with adding industrial noise, sounds effects, and backing beats to tracks. When I suggested he try listening to similar artists for ideas, he told me he wanted to make his own music, not copy someone else.

Well... it's rather unfortunate as his skill would sharpen much faster by learning from others much more proficient, but you can't force the kid. On the other hand, though, one can't help but admire his fierce individualism...

Well, I definitely got my start - as well as spent most of my time as a composer - just experimenting, essentially.  And while I will say it is important to learn the language of music - as well as learn how the masters used that language - I will say that I've often been surprised with how many composition majors can't seem to wrap their head around the fact that I want to "make a woman's choir sound like the ashen remnants of ghosts rising from the void".  In other words, the elements of sound design and imagination can sometimes elude them.  So I would say, let your son experiment!  Some day, give him some Debussy or Bach and see what crazy thing he can do with it!
