Cool, downloading. Can we just install over the old version? Savegames compatible?

It seems to install into a different folder "AoD Demo R2". So no need to install over older version, I guess

edit: and old saves seem to work

http://www.irontowerstudio.com/files/AoD_demo_R2.exe - 150MB

http://rapidshare.com/files/327926962/AoD_demo_R2.exe (when we run out of bandwidth again)

"Turns out our bandwidth wasn't 5GB, as I thought for some reasons (I blame pre-release stress), but 100GB (and it was killed in less than a day). Anyway, we're preparing to roll out a new version, tested by some loyal patriots, later on today and I've increased our bandwidth to 160 (which sadly is the maximum with Bell).

I'll ask for everyone's help once again. When the new build (not a patch!) is released, please download it from our site while the supplies bandwidth lasts and upload it to filefront and other sites.

Thanks in advance."

Please download it and test to see if it works better than the original version.

I would suggest mediafire for uploading when your bandwith runs out. You can make a free account there and as far as I know there are no bandwith limitations, and it's much faster than rapidshare and completely free.

Thanks. So, did you guys have a chance to try it? Is it "what the original release should have been!" or are there some game breaking issues still?

Title: Re: New version released
Post by: Anonxeuix on December 30, 2009, 12:07:10 pm
I haven't had any issues yet.

Although I've switched to OpenGL now (it has nothing to do with this new version being released, because it's been happening on both versions), because it just runs so much better. You only see the difference when you compare them both (OpenGL and Direct3D). The only downside is that in D3D the game loads up in about 5 seconds, whilst it takes around 10-15 seconds in OpenGL (for some reason, even though everything is sharper in D3D, which I would assume it should thus take longer to load).

And I also get some texture problems in D3D if I wander about the city.

Just thought I'd mention it because it seems everyone is using OpenGL, most people can't even play in D3D (at least I can).

No issues yet.  Then again, the game has very little issues with WINE.  Using the OpenGL rendrer of course, since the D3D is painfully slow.

No issues, works like a charm. Cycling through attack modes is possible with numbers now, cool! :salute:

I will report if anything goes wrong.

Had quite a bit of issues with the original release, this one worked perfectly. The only crash I had was when I tried to alt-tab. Then again some mainstream titles don't like alt-tabbing either in their final releases, and it's nothing game-breaking :D. Well done!

Title: Re: New version released

So do I just overwrite the old one or do I need to get rid of it first?

Title: Re: New version released
Post by: Anonxeuix on December 30, 2009, 03:37:03 pm
It won't install in the same folder, so it doesn't matter. Delete the old one.

Tested it on Windows. Game doesn't crash when rotating camera in D3D rendering mode anymore.

I uploaded a torrent for those interested to http://www.torrentreactor.net/torrents/3646352/Age-of-Decadence-combat-demo-release-2 -- my first torrent seed but I tested it and apparently it's working ok.

Edit: Attached the torrent file.

Two big issues I had with the game are still there. Crash when rotating camera in D3D, OpenGL corruption of some menus/screens.

Title: Re: New version released
Post by: caster on December 30, 2009, 05:02:58 pm
Greg, did you try just waiting for some time after you load into the game under D3D?
Or disable shadows for a few minutes.

I found that if i refrain from doing any serious moves with the camera at first, after loading into the game, and just wait it out for a minute or two kind of works.

Guys, could you try changing to D3D, turning off the shadows and only then loading into the game.
Then wait, dont do any sudden moves or rotate the camera for a while.
You know, let it all settle down a bit, walk around some (without rotating the camera too much!) and just wait for a while until it becomes smoother. Let it load :)

Does that make any difference at all?
I managed to play in D3D like that until i would be forced to reload and then i would forget not to zoom out and rotate - which would crash it.

It seemed to me its much more prone to crashes right after loading.

I seem to get the camera crash only if I go crazy and start excessively rotating the camera around right after load up. Other than that I haven't noticed any issues with D3D. OpenGl still suffers from sluggish performance and graphic artifacts, but it's all good thanks to D3D working like a charm.

Title: Re: New version released
Post by: Gregorus Prime on December 30, 2009, 06:07:48 pm
Addendum to my previous post:

It appears that the character creation screen is now working perfectly fine in OpenGL for me. I don't know what you guys did but it does make it seem that the corruption problem is on your end, guys.

In the last build it looked like the likelihood of rotating the camera causing a crash increased the closer the camera was to the arena itself. I'm going to try switching to D3D, loading up my save, and then leaving the house to go pick up some medicine from the pharmacy. That should give me a nice 20 minute buffer to test this theory, but even if it works, I resent any program that behaves like a temperamental child instead of a cold, emotionless machine that does what I tell it to and will not be distracted by such useless queries as "what is love?" once the robot uprising begins. Nobody will be spared.

Same here. Loading with shadows turned off seems to help too. Especially it could for those of us with more... sensitive machines.

Letting it sit for twenty minutes while I was out questing for my Levothyroxine Elixir and Footlong Sandwich of Spicy Chicken with Lite Ranch Sauce did indeed allow me to go nuts with the camera rotation with nary a crash in sight. This is good.

In the future builds do add a build number to the main screen, like in the lower right side or something.

So, running the new build 0.7.7.2702 ( according to the Readme.txt )
WINE - OpenGL: fine, as previously reported
WINE - D3D: still crashing as the attached picture shows

If you guys look at the fixes list, you may notice that I didn't do anything with rendering at all. That's why reports like "new version crashes in <video mode X>, but now works fine with <video mode Y>" are very mysterious and make want to start practicing shamanism.

That's strange. I don't have any issues/crashes with D3D enabled in the new demo build, but I had some with the first one. Take a look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamanism), maybe that will help.

What I noticed most were the changes made to the available armour: it is now harder to get a DR 8 armour. I think this is a good change, although it didn't affect me that much on my current playthrhough, because it was a bit silly to use the same armour for most of the game, until you got a better armour (in terms of DR) from the Triarii leader.
I also noticed my opponents attacking my head more often when I did not wear a helmet, but that might be mere coincidence. Again, a good thing.
Liked the boost to the synergy bonuses: now it finaly makes sense to carry a weapon that is not your specialty for certain situatinos, like shield-splitting.

Only thing I didn't like so far, but maybe it already happened in the first version but I never noticed it, is the abscense of meteor/mithril two-handed swords. The best you get is a balanced steel sword from the Triarii, and I don't consider balanced better than the damage and skill bonuses provided by meteor/mithril, at least for two-handed weapons.

Just downloading now. Even though it's only been a few days I'm kicking myself for being late to it. I could have sworn I was checking out the AOD forum just a day or two ago, but I only read about it when I visited the rpgcodex front page. I hope my old box is able to handle it.

UPDATE: Weird. My screen briefly flicks to black like it's about to run a fullscreen program, but then flicks right back to windows explorer. I hear music playing in the background, but can't see or interact with it. Task Manager doesn't show any corresponding application, but AOD.exe is listed in the processes. I let the music play out, and still nothing happens, so I kill the process.

UPDATE2: Looks like I have the same problem (http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/topic,1215.msg40318.html#msg40318) as axedice.

I had already tried getting the latest version of directx. Because my graphics card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2, I thought I had already gotten the latest drivers years ago. Figured I should just pop in and say that while I got my ass handed to me in the demo, it propelled AOD into "buy even under the threat of starvation" category.

Well, on my G84, it allows me to emulate N40, N44 and G80 GPUs, while Riva TNT2 is based on NV5. Am I missing something?

We ran out of bandwidth again (only 5% left), so I had to remove the demo for now. If you're trying to download the demo, use one of the mirror links.

So how many downloads are you at total, and can they be divided by version?

No idea because there are some many download sources. Approx. 2,100 downloads from our site, 2,636 downloads from the FileFront (2k v1, 636 v2). I'd say that other main links probably have similar stats - 1,5-2.5k.

That number of 10K doesnt seem so distant now.
And i sincerely hope ill be around when 100K gets under the belt.

Seein how you guys have several releases planned, Zrpg, Scars, Cyclops and other stuff - each game is going to buff interest in others over time. Nice effect to have.

unfortunately I've found a nasty bug. It seems that enemies stop attacking after having been disarmed, they reequip their weapons but just stand there.

i don't know if it was related to disarming but for a while no enemy was attacking me, not even at the start of a battle. after restarting the game it worked as it should.

Hey, so I downloaded the old R3 demo and used the patch, but I still just got the knockdown bug. I got knocked down by the triarii with the hammer, it kinda glitched out and I didn't get up properly and then I did get up, but the hammer and sword trarii stopped fighting (leader was dead at that point). :(

I know, I even posted R3.1 after you posted your mirror. I appreciate your efforts and time, just thought that it's counterproductive to post a mirror to the old version, even with a patch.

No, it worked fine. Now if only you could describe how did it "glitch out" and what were the events that triggered it, and what do you mean under "didn't get up properly", and how did it differ from "then I did get up"...

Well the getting up properly stuff was graphical glitching. It wasn't the smooth transition like usual. It all started when the hammer triarii knocked me down. So my character immediately skips to being flat, no falling graphic. Then he stays down...so on my turn I try to move away and I think the opportunity attacks came at him before he got up so he was still sprawled out on the ground. Then on my second try he did get up and moved away as far as he could. At that point the triarii stopped fighting...they just stood there and waited for me to kill them.

I experienced another weird thing where I was using my spear fellow and for some reason or other the enemy character...I think it was Carbo, skipped a turn. He didn't move at all....just skipped....didn't make sense to me since I just skipped my next turn and then he ran up to me started hacking away at me, so he could have done it the previous turn too...he just thought it would be fun to wait I guess...weird...

Interesting... so you even gave commands to your character while he was on the ground?
"Then on my second try he did get up..." <-- does this mean that "getting up" animation was played?

Yup I gave commands while he was on the ground and yup the second time the animation was played.

I don't think he did play around with his inventory, if he did, it seems like a poor AI choice, because it had no effect except to waste time.

I also found a new issue, the guy at the inn keeps throwing nets at me THROUGH THE WALL...grrr...maybe it's just through the door at a weird angle, but I definitely think he shouldn't be able to throw it at me from his angle.

_ _ X _ _
_ _ _ _ _
== D ==
_M _ _ _

X = him
D = door
M = me

Ага вот только люди не вечны XD Через много-много лет после того как я скончаюсь и когда мои дети уже будучи стариками последуют за мной я спрошу у них на том свете: "ну как AoD оправдал ожидания?", "захватили мне копию?"  я боюсь услышать в ответ: "when its done". А теперь переведите это гуглом будет прикольно

Hehe, perhaps I'm just used to waiting. Four of my favorite metal bands did not release a thing from 1999/2004 until 2009/2010, sometimes giving vague updates, and in the case of AoD we can at least contribute to the release by not bothering the developers spreading info about AoD and donating.

I'm not Russian btw.
