Is this the magician that was mentioned earlier as part of one of the text adventures?

The history of Faelan is a little unplausible, specifically the part where he is overwhelmed and beaten unconscious.  Dude's a slave, an unpopular, lazy slave no less.  He kills a group of Imperial Guards, with magic, and you say they decide to capture him in order to execute him later on, maybe after he regains consciousness and kills a dozen more people, like the gaolers and people at the execution. Why wouldn't they execute him on the spot?  When you say he had already been beaten many times and they were "coming to make an example of him", I got the impression that they were going to execute him in the first place.

If he spoke some arcane words and they thought gagging him would render him powerless, it would make more sense.  Or you could say they captured him specifically because they felt he would be of use to Lord Gaelius, who collects freaks to do his bidding.

Fantastic portrait, as usual.

Why dont they just string him upside down on a tree by the roadside, after chop off his head and disembowel him first.

Sure, it's a bit barbarous. Wait, we are talking about decay of civilization here, not western civ as we know it.  Roll Eyes

Dont forget he know magic too. Any healthy thug know better than leave such alive and with an uncut throat.

Re: Faelan's story is a little unplausible

A slave is nothing. A slave with extraordinary abilities is too valuable to be executed on the spot. Not to mention that whoever ruins such a valuable property will have to answer to the higher-ups and will most likely become a slave himself very quickly. Alternatively, whoever discovers the slave's talents and protect the master's property until a decision is made will be rewarded.

I mean, look at this way. Who would want to tell Gaelius that a slave with mage-like powers was discovered ... and quickly killed?

Edit: In unrelated news, the artist has finished the assassins and merchant guilds portraits:

Notable assassins:

Notable merchants:

Looks pretty much inspired from Lee Van Cleef.

My new avatar is basically John Goodman as a vampire. I'm strangely okay with that.

Why as a vampire?

He's paler, darker of hair, redder about the eyes, and a bit more sinister-looking. So, really just a little older, I suppose, but whatever.

I know what you were trying to get across, but the way you did it is implausible.  What you said was Mr. Starey-pants was beaten down and was being held for execution, and "word of his deed reached Gaelius", like one of his spies passed it on or something, not like he was knocked out and kept unconscious or blindfolded or something since he apparently can kill people at will.  This one time I don't think I'm being pedantic.
