This story isn't actually going to be part of the game.  It was just something I came up with.

Huh?
Not part of the game? Not improving any skills? Aww... Why the hell is it in the Cyclopean forum then?

Maybe you guys should create a special forum for this kind of fiction? Call it "Montparnasse".  Smile

It's a great story, BUT for god's sake, use the word HERR not "HEIR".

     --FIXED, thanks!-- Scott

An excellent read.

One thing that confused me somewhat was the sister's name, as Mädchen is the German word for girl...or is this a deliberately odd choice of name?

My favorite story from you Scott so far, loved it. Also, let me just say, that I never read in game books, I just don't. It always feels like a waste of time to me, since I am usually pressed for time when I play these days and during that hour/two I am gaming I'd rather actually be playing. As such, I'd rather have you make a compilation of all your stories and have it released as a small book that ships with the game, then I could read when I am not playing, and as a result both enjoy some great stories properly, and be able to immerse my self in the atmosphere of the game when I  play it. And that to me sounds much better than being forced to read in game books to play, or just having these stories as in game fluff. Just my two cents.

Mädchen is a common Germanic name, that's all.  Whoops, there goes my mystique!

Well, not all of it. I'm Austrian you see, and as such thought I possessed a certain knowledge of common Germanic names. However I never heard of it being used as a name, couldn't find any reference to it being used that way, and anyway it seemed rather jarring since, well, would you name your daughter Girl?

What are your sources? I'm quite intrigued by now, pray unravel this mystery for me.

Madchen Amick?  I can't believe you've never heard of anyone with that first name.  Maybe it's just uncommon in Austria?

Regarding in-game books: I just replayed Ultima VII for the heck of it, and despite having done this various ties previously I still read about half the in-game books in it. Some are good and some are silly, but the only real reason I didn't read them all was the awkward font / presentation. Scott's sound like they will all be good, and will certainly be presented easier on the eye when the time comes.

And if people want to skip them, I guess they can.

I honestly don't think Mädchen is used as a first name, at least not commonly, in German speaking countries. Mädchen Amick is American after all. Probably has German ancestry though. Then again, my real name is Swedish for bear, so why couldn't you call someone 'Girl'?

EDIT: Great story, BTW

EDIT2: Oh, and Mädchen Amick is seriously hot.
