Just checked out NMA frontpage... well that was unexpected. Next Fallout to be made by Obsidian, Sawyer as lead. Same engine and gameplay style, which is a shame since I found Fallout 3's gameplay quite boring, but hopefully better writing. 2010 release.

I hope they will fix VATS.
Also Josh Sawyer as a Lead! woohoooo!
It's a shame though that Avellone isn't Creative Lead, but maybe after he finish Alpha Protocol...

No way in hell Avellone would pass this. And since AP is nearing completition...

But with only a year of development time, it's highly unlikely that theyd make any significant changes to the engine. But hey, atleast better quests and writing!

Better writing is guaranteed. Thing that worries me is that they'll have a bazillion Fallout-ideas that's pent up during the years, probably a whole lot of good ideas, and that there'll be ten different voices nagging to get their baby into the game. The result would be the much dreaded fun park. Sawyer as the lead will have to take a firm grip on this one.

With that said, I'm pleasantly surprised with these news. Sure, Obsidian hasn't made a game I really like except for MotB, but dammit, they do have the talent.

Would I sound like a skeptic if I pointed out that Obsidian is stuck with a crappy Fisher Price game engine?  I don't know how anyone can make an enjoyable game out of that steaming pile of code.  If they had had the opportunity to develop their own game from the ground up, or had several years to modify (re-write) the game engine, then I might get excited.

Obsidian doing Fallout was something I hoped would happen some day, though that hope was faint, microscopic even. This was certainly a big surprise. Having said that, the news doesn't feel quite as good as I imagined it would. Mainly because FO:NV is probably going to be very similar to FO3 (first-person, sandbox-y, combat that looks like a sub-par FPS, VATS), which is not exactly my usual cup of tea. Of course, this assumption might be wrong, so we'll see. I'm glad for the Obsidian boys and gals and wish them the best of luck with this. Smile

I am pretty excited about this. Although with the short dev time it is a bit of a concern.

The engine used for Fallout 3 has been used in plenty of big games. (Civ 4) but noting else really AAA from the first person perspective. Hopefully the guys at Obsidian will get a chance to put their mark on it.

Its going to be in the same style as FO3, so VATS and all that. Its not a great system but it can be improved upon. Some statements that the guys from Obsidian are doing the project they want. Its not going to be Turn based isometric, but I think it will be a great game with a great story.

Well, Fallout 2 was made in one year, so I'm not really concerned about the quality of the game. Let's hope it's not very buggy, though.

That's what I was thinking. I'm sure they'll be able to improve a number of things, like story and dialogue, but the engine will still suck.

I'm not getting my hopes up for this. Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised.

More and more that's going to be my motto.  Expect nothing and you won't be disappointed.  And a few gems still pop up from time to time, like King's Bounty and Elven Legacy.  They're not RPGs of course.   Roll Eyes

The real question: must Obsidian provide a "jack-of-all-trades" character progression?  Will they be permitted to create a strong character-RPG based game?

I won't become interested until those questions get answered (and what the answers are).

Knights of the Old Republic II wants to have a word with you. Have Obsidian Entertainment learned nothing?

I'd like to take a moment here and address the issue of expectations. There is nothing revolutionary or evolutionary about AoD. I hope it will be a good game, nothing else.

I don't know, I'm not them. Maybe they have, I'll see in a year. Perhaps they learned not to try and bite something bigger they can chew and they make a less ambitious game, one that they can fit into that timeframe.

KOTOR2 schedule was actually cut by several months relative to when it was supposed to come out. Republic Commando missed the Christmas release slot and K2 was moved up to take its place.
