On the one hand, we'll finally see what he was writing and shoving into his safe deposit box every day.

On the other hand, now some idiot will try to make a Catcher in the Rye movie.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading new stories/novels by Salinger, which might be a window into his mind all those years he was hiding out from the public eye. If there's another Nine Stories in there, I'll be ecstatic.

I'm sure some producer is already working on greenlighting a Catcher in the Rye film, but Salinger's works have had almost unofficial movies made out of them, with Royal Tenenbaums practically being a Glass family movie and Igby Goes Down as close to being a film version of Catcher as an actual one (which is not to imply it's a particularly great film). I don't know what's worse - a film version of Salinger's books despite his strong personal wishes for them to not be made into movies or remakes/reboots of movies that are a decade old.

I doubt there will be artists in this day and age that will be able to just drop out of the limelight after releasing a masterpiece, but I greatly respect Salinger for keeping quiet on the hows and whys of his characters and not spending the last half of his career turning out dreck because his name would sell books. It may be that he didn't release anything else because he didn't think it would stand up to his legacy, or the rumors about him writing during that time were false and he spent all his time trying on religions, banging fangirls, and drinking his own bodily fluids. Guess we'll find out in the coming months.

Good riddance!

Seriously, "Catcher in the Rye" was a piece of shit.  I'll never understand why people like it.

Because they have souls.  Angry

Seriously though I can see why you'd dislike it. It's not something that I can easily distill into a single sentence. Assorted ramblings about style and evocation and blah blah blah get to the explosions and car chases already but if you can't even see it then I doubt you ever will.
