Regarding cleanliness, we'll be looking at using decals in-engine to dirty up floor and walls rather than building clean/dirty versions of the same texture.

Scott, you didn't say what programs you are using for the 3D stuff...

3DS Max --Scott
Why does everybody wanna know that? What does it matter what program? Isn't the final stuff the same?  Neutral

Nah... Its how much you spend on your 3D software, that counts most.  Wink

But seriously, anyone one can make those kind of models and you don't need 3D Studio Max to do it. 3D World Studio is less than $100 and is ideal for making buildings and rooms like that and anyone can learn it. For more complicated models, you can get the Hexagon 3D modeler for $30, if you buy the right magazine. The only thing you might have to spend a bit of money on is textures, if you don't have a good digital camera.

The cheapest place to place a fireplace is the place placed towards the exterior of the house.

Just a designers tip.  Salute

That may be true, but in the old American houses I've been researching the chimney is still somewhere in the middle about one time in three.  Luckily, since Cyclopean takes place in autumn, the cost of heating these places for me is going to be minimal.  In fact, I'll probably just tell the NPCs to wear a sweater.

It sucks. Lovecraft would sneer at your pathetic model, and then call you some sort of horrible racial slur, and there would be an awkward silence and everyone would just feel really uncomfortable.

Seriously, looks good, but I really don't think anyone's interested in Cyclopean for the graphics. The backdrop looks nice, I guess, but I'm here for the drama.

You might think that, but in fact you'd be dead wrong.  Take a look at the views for older threads starting with Concept Art relative to those with the subject Writing.  People like to look at pretty pictures.  It's also a tangible indication that the game isn't vaporware, whereas me and Ted yakking is not.  Here is a preview of the next one:

Models look great. I assume the textures are still placeholders. They are way to clean.

So who's working on the game now, except you obviously?

Nevermind. I need to check these forums more often.

Pretty serviceable, yes.

Not dark enough for a Lovecraft game, but that's what the brightness setting is for!

Yes, I suggested Scott to darken the textures a little and to add some structural dirt to them, apart from the dirt decals he plans on adding. Here is a pic showing more or less that (I hope he doesn't mind me posting it)

I'll probably have six or eight different (clean) wooden plank floors.  Instead of doubling the number of wooden plank floor textures, I intend to use (or at least try out) dirty decal overlays.  Until then, everyone relax.

Another consideration:  floor and wall textures tile.  By using a decal on the floor, I can concentrate more grime along the walls and corners.  With a tiling texture, I would have to apply a uniform patina of grit as in Oscar's example.  This will be more representative of the true filth that fans have come to expect from ITS.
